Becoming a parent can feel like you’ve moved to a different planet.  Especially you working woman out there, having to now break down into the world that our moms or our grandmothers came from, when what you may be used to be handling a computer and staff, am I right lady boss?

Be prepared for a new type of schedule, say bye to those piling papers, and on-going calls, as the days and nights are turns upside down, you’re going to be handling a lot of new equipment, and there’s a tiny alien yelling in a language you don’t understand and how do you stop it? Ops,  what is that weird smell? Hmm!

Do take note that one of the most cautious drives you’ll ever take is the one bringing your baby home with you for the first time, but that’s okay better be safe than sorry they say and once you’ve trusted your car seat, you’ll be driving at the normal speed limit – do not worry, you aren’t doomed to turtle living.

It’s true. There’s no official instruction manual for becoming a parent, but let this article give that a shot to try to ease you into this massive transition.

Firstly, you’re not the first parent to wonder why you’ve been entrusted with a little person without an instruction manual on how to operate them.

The 40 weeks (give or take) of pregnancy allow time for more than just picking out names; it’s your opportunity to plan and prepare for this new being and member of the family.

When I say prepare I also mean mentally, search up baby “tricks and hacks” and of course that shopping list to cover. The more you know about your newborn, the better equipped you’ll be when they arrive, so sit tight and listen carefully.

Diapers, wet wipes, a week of clothes, car seat, stroller, oh my! Or, shall we say, Oh buy It’s easy to get overwhelmed by everyone telling you what you  need for your baby, not to mention the mass volume of choices available for each product, brands and whatsoever, and then the stress having to wonder which is best besides the one that costs the price of a laptop.

Am I right parents?

But before you max out your credit card, do a little research. While certain supplies are definitely essential (you’re going to need a lot of diapers and milk supply), others are purely optional (did your parents use a baby wipe warmer for you or even an automatic rocker? I highly doubt it).

Most important, keep in mind that new safety standards mean some items that used to be must-haves are now definite no-no’s, for example – drop-side cribs.

This article below will allow you to navigate the aisles safely, so let us get cracking…

Budgeting and Be Realistic

Baby gear, clothes, diapering supplies, and childcare can add up pretty quickly if you are not cautious. If you – like most of us – are on a budget, planning ahead for these extra expenses can help ease the financial burden when the clock starts ticking and its getting close to the date.

Your baby’s impending arrival also heralds a host of decisions you might not have given thought to before, like constructing a will, choosing life which is the best insurance, and starting a college fund and of course additional saving, and even before all that preparing for the initial arrival.

While it may be tempting to leave these things on the back burner until your kid absolutely out of diapers, it’s best to take the plunge and start thinking about them before your baby arrives, perhaps even prepare a first month supply. Work out the brands and items you will purchase, that way you can come up with a monthly allowance set aside, so the bills don’t creep up on you.

But it’s not all bad! Along with a price tag, a baby brings tax breaks. Don’t forget to read up on those, too and run run run for all the sales you see that hint “BABY” anywhere in the stores or online.

New Born Basics

They call that first baby the practice baby for a reason and that is because new parents usually learn as they go, no book, no friend, no family member and certainly no Youtube video is going to really teach you – “the touch”.

While you can’t prepare for everything (just wait for your first public blowout), getting a few basics under your belt can be a tremendous help, and the source for these is the media. So absorb the techniques and mold them to be your own once your baby is in your midst.

You might consider taking a newborn class that covers basics like diapering and bathing, or asking for a little tutorial from a family member or friend will suffice just as well. Maternity and Paternity Leave

Ok allow us to make a comparison with the US, here is a statement from information in the US – If there’s one thing that’s consistent about family leave in the United States, its that its inconsistent and the laws vary by state and the benefits vary by employer.

Depending on where you work, you may get several weeks of maternity leave during which you’re paid part or all of your normal paycheck and this is typically covered by a short-term disability plan and in this circumstance you don’t get paid leave or you want to supplement it, you can cobble together vacation time, sick time, and unpaid leave – which may be handy for some of you.

Paternity leave is just as varied as maternity leave is.

New parents are allowed up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, without risk of losing their job, by the U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). With this being said, you may not be eligible if your company is considerably small or you haven’t been at your job long (usually you need to pass your probation period and in some cases even be on the second contract).

Study the options in your work place, and beforehand you need to calculate and decide how much leave you with you take and apply for it early so that you can re-plan it if it isn’t possible as wished.

Now breathe out, everything’s going to be okay, you are not alone in this. These are the initials, get this in place, and of course figure out which direction you are going to turn to during your confinement month – care, bed rest, exercise, work, which ever you choose make sure to stay warm, nutritional and rested. We all freaked out at this stage, so keep it together, it does work out!
